Long-term blood pressure monitoring
During a long-term blood pressure monitoring test, the patient wears a portable blood pressure device continuously for about 16 to 24 hours. The device automatically measures blood pressure at intervals of 15 (or 30) minutes. The measurement interval is often set longer at night.
The doctor refers to this as ABPM, which stands for "ambulatory blood pressure monitoring".
Long-term blood pressure monitoring is an easy test to perform. However, it can disturb sleep for some people. In these cases, sleep may also need to be monitored in order to identify a lack of nighttime blood pressure reduction caused by insufficient sleep.
