Does hibiscus tea lower blood pressure?
Teas are a popular way to quench thirst and are valued as an equally low-calorie alternative to water. In winter they warm you up, and in summer they provide a refreshing alternative when choosing a drink. Teas brewed from natural plant parts without any other additives can also influence and support health.
One example is hibiscus or tea made from the flowers of this plant.
The tea drinkers' blood pressure dropped noticeably over those six weeks. This means that systolic pressure fell by an average of 7.2 mmHg and diastolic pressure by an average of 3.1 mmHg. The best results were seen in participants who started with a systolic reading of at least 130 mmHg. This group lowered their systolic readings by an average of 13.2 mmHg.
The researchers suspect that an antioxidant component in hibiscus is responsible for the blood-pressure-lowering effect.
This effect is seen with plain hibiscus tea. Adding milk, cream, sugar, or similar ingredients reduces this positive effect.
Hibiscus is also thought to have a positive effect on blood vessels. Japanese researchers found that extracts from the flowers lowered cholesterol levels in rats and protected blood lipids from oxidation. This reduced the development of arteriosclerosis. As is well known, elastic, non-calcified blood vessels are also good for blood pressure, so this may have an additional supportive effect.
However, a 2021 review puts the effect of hibiscus on blood pressure into perspective and considers the evidence-that is, the demonstrable benefit-to be insufficient.

People with elevated blood pressure may benefit from drinking hibiscus tea, but its effectiveness has not yet been conclusively proven. Why not try meeting part of your daily fluid needs with this refreshing, slightly tart, ruby-red drink?
